What’s the difference between stained glass, colored glass, painted glass, and leaded glass?

These terms describe different aspects of how glass is made, decorated, and assembled, and many pieces combine more than one technique.

Colored glass has color added during manufacturing (or, in older glass, from naturally occurring impurities). The color runs through the glass and does not wear away.

Painted glass has paint or enamels applied to the surface to add shading, imagery, lettering, or fine detail. The glass is then fired in a kiln so the decoration becomes permanent.

Leaded glass describes the construction method: individual pieces of glass—clear, textured, or colored—are cut and joined with lead or metal came to form a panel.

This was a restoration of an 85 year old leaky bay window which had been repeatedly patched and ultimately covered, in frustration, with a huge pane of glass. After a few years it began leaking and also prevented maintenance. Jason recommended a traditional restoration. He then removed the secondary glass and the bad patchwork. He restored the glass and glazing using traditional methods. It was excellent and speedy work. Now maintenance is simple. And the window looks perfect and doesn't leak.
